Section A - Film Form in US Cinema from the Silent Era to 1990

Answer Questions 1 and 2

  • With reference to a sequence from the film made between 1930-1960 which you have studied, explain how mise-en-scene has been used to create meaning in the sequence.
  • With reference to a sequence from the film made between 1961-1990 which you have studied, explain how performance has been used to create meaning in the sequence.

Answer either Question 3 or Question 4

  • To what extent does the selection and combination of micro-elements of film form drive spectator response?  You must refer to examples from one film 1930-1960 and examples from one film from 1961-1990 in your answer.
  • Compare how cinematography and editing contribute to aesthetics of the films you have studied?  You must refer to examples from one film te Silent Era and examples from one film from 1961-1990 in your answer.

  • With reference to the German expressionist of French new wave film you have studied, discuss how the film reflects political context in the narrative?
  • Analyse how the experimental surrealist films you have studied have used micro-elements of film form to.construct meanings.
  • To what extent are the experimental surrealist films you have studied challenge conventional film narratives
