Lesson One: Representations

Objectives (This is a slide heavy session with many ideas)

  • Knowledge : To review understanding of the film framework
  • Learning : To build ideas and strategies of how to study film
  • Understanding : To link knowledge and learning by completing analysis tasks

Starter/Loop Activity (5 Minutes)

Slide 3 Task 1A Students respond to the task from the Lesson Resource: Analysis of film Doctor No Poster. Students to write response in books/folders.

Prepare the Learning (5 Minutes)

Share the objectives. Remind students of the objectives we are working towards meeting. We will be focusing on the students learning how to apply their knowledge to demonstrate their understanding. We will be using their familiar format of ‘Preparing for Learning: Our Focus Today’ and ‘Constructing our Learning: Rethinking our Knowledge’.

Construct the Learning (15 Minutes)

Slides 5-7 We start with establishing some basic principles of contextual study. What elements are involved, what questions do we need to ask of the films we are studying.

Slides 7-8 Offer a chance to focus attention on the key learning points linked into the era of a film’s production and its impact on that film.

Slide 9 Task 1B Enables the students to apply the micro elements of film language from previous learning in Unit 1 of the Edusites Film Language Unit. This is then developed in the presentations/Q&A/feedback/discussion on Slides 10-11.

Application of Learning (25 Minutes pair/feedback to class/individual work)

Review the models of Hall on Slides 12-14 that offer a quick explanation that can be followed according to the needs/prior learning of the group. The graphic on Slide 14 can be used for even speedier…
