FM4 Unit Introduction

The A Level coursework is worth 25% of the whole grade and 50% of the A2 year – it is important that the right time is spent on the project, as there are three exam sections to work towards. Aim to devote 10-12 weeks to FM3 ensuring all work is submitted before Easter to allow time for marking, internal moderation and standardisation and also feedback before submitting to WJEC for external moderation. This will leave time to teach Section A and Section B before Easter with Section C: Single Film Critical Study taught after Easter again leaving plenty of time for exam revision (FilmEdu

suggested

structure only).

At the beginning, or as near to the beginning of the year as possible, negotiate the coursework project with your students and then explain that sessions will be in the first instance researching coursework FM3 before exam teaching commences. The coursework is split into a research element, Small-Scale Research Project, itself in two parts – an Annotated Catalogue and a Presentation Script (see full details below). This should always be undertaken first with the introduction of the second coursework element, the Creative Project just before Christmas.

Small-Scale Research Project

For the Small-Scale Research Project the student has to focus on one film (but also referencing 2 others) and choose one research topic – from Auteur, Institution, Star/Performer, Social, Political and Cultural Studies, Gender issues, Ethnicity, Institution or Technology. The students need to choose the films and topic in negotiation with the teacher and very much take responsibility for that decision.
