Puente Antiguo, New Mexico. Three astro-physicists are in the desert: Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgard) and Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings).


They are studying atmosphere disturbances and aurora.

When a lightning storm starts, they head quickly towards it in their van. The van hits a man and they stop.

The victim is a handsome, well built young man. He is not dead, but semi-conscious.


A voiceover (Anthony Hopkins) describes a battle in 900 AD between the Asgardians and the Frost Giants (who want to plunge mortals into a new ice age). The former win and take a casket (the source of their power) to the realm of Asgard, an opulent and fantastical world. The voice belongs to Odin, the King of Asgard, who is talking to his two sons. One is a thoughtful dark boy, the other an energetic blonde. Both were “born to be kings?, but only one will be.

We then cut to a lavish ceremony, sometime later and the boys are now young men. The older blonde, cheeky/ arrogant son, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is being formally recognised as crown prince, and the dark son, Loki (Tom Hiddleston), looks on jealously. As Thor swears himself to the realm, the ceremony is interrupted: intruders (Frost Giants) have broken into the secured rooms, to steal back the power casket. A ‘Destroyer’ robot kills the intruders and saves the casket. The King and his sons inspect the damage. Odin and Thor argue, as Thor wants to attack and Odin tells him not to as he has a truce with the Frost Giant King.

An enraged Thor meets with his friends, and Loki. Thor goes against his father’s wishes and plans to attack the Frost Giants. Volstagg (Ray Stevenson), Fandral (Josh Dallas), Hogun (Tabanobu Asano) and Sif (Jaimie Alexander) follow Thor to Jötunheim, the Frost Giant planet (a dark wasteland) although it is “forbidden?.
