A television news report provides the prologue / chorus for Romeo and Juliet, introducing the tale of the “star-crossed lovers?. The city of Verona is divided by a feud between the two wealthiest businessmen - Lord Capulet and Lord Montague.

As the Montagues arrive in a petrol station, they are met by the Capulets. Whilst Benvolio (leader of the Montagues) tries to maintain peace, Tybalt (leader of the Capulets and “King of Cats?) cannot be persuaded and leads them into battle. Tybalt shoots one of the Montagues as they drive away. As the petrol station explodes behind him, he chases after Benvolio relentlessly. Their final battle is interrupted by Prince and his officers. Both boys are called to court; the Prince declares that their feud must no longer torture the streets of Verona.

Romeo sits on the beach; he writes about love and feels heartbroken over Rosaline. Benvolio arrives and challenges him to attend the Capulet ball in order to meet other beautiful women. Meanwhile, Juliet’s mother calls her to get ready and expresses that Paris, a charming rich man, longs for her hand in marriage. Whilst her mother is excited, Juliet seems unenthused.

Mercutio, Romeo’s best friend, offers Romeo the tablet of ‘Queen Mab’, that he promises will allow him to see true love. At the party, Romeo feeling nauseous, retreats to a side room to splash his face with water. Tybalt notices the presence of the Montagues but is warned off starting trouble by Lord Capulet. Whilst resting, Romeo spots Juliet on the other side of a fish tank. They engage in a shy exchange before she is called back to the main hall. Here, he mother encourages her to dance with Paris. As she does Romeo cannot peel his gaze from her. They talk in secret whilst Paris watches the display and escape into a lift where they kiss. When she is called by her mother and the nurse maid, Romeo suddenly realises that she is a Capulet and her nurse maid informs her...
