Nosferatu | Film Summary

This film’s full title is Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror and it is considered an essential title in the canon of horror cinema, being an adaptation of the novel Dracula that had been written by Bram Stoker. The film is widely considered to be the most faithful adaptation of the novel yet to have been produced and it is essential viewing for all students with an interest in vampire-centred narratives. The film has been recognized for emphasising the erotic qualities of the vampire as a character. Like Caligari, the film is a horror about monstrous behavior.

The film uses light and shadow to great dramatic effect. For example, there is a moment when the vampire attacks a woman in her bed but all we see is the shadow of his hand across her chest as though taking the life from her.

The film uses a range of visual effects to create its illusions and images of the unreal and it is important to note that Nosferatu is a silent movie (albeit accompanied by a music score). This film was also significant for being…
